Most of you know this, but it's Xander Harris, from Buffy.

It's a weird coincidence that Joss created a character that was basically the male version of me, and gave him a name that is so close to mine. But the fact that Xander eventually makes good gives me hope.

So far, back still hurts. I also have vicodin and flexeril, but I've been asleep all day so I'm not gonna take them again for awhile. The pain is not as bad as it has been, which may be due to the fact that I was up and around for a bit yesterday. Apparently walking around even though it hurts makes the next day hurt less if I stay in bed. Perhaps it's just a matter of comparison.

Anyways, just an update. I'm going to be in MA from the 9th to the 17th, and still have a ticket free for anyone who'd like to go with to Jenny Lewis.

<lj-embed id="31" />

I know most of you will not watch this, but I'm asking you to anyway. This man has an amazing vision. I know it's just a speech, but if you listen, within the speech are the seeds of practical things he is trying to put into action. He speaks of the people of the Middle East, and other countries with respect, as people who are possible allies in his vision, instead of enemies based on past mistakes and misunderstanding on both sides.

I seriously think this man has the ability to make the whole world, not just the US, a much better place.

Lulu just sent me a notice that my book is listed on Amazon.com!

Would those of you who have read it leave reviews? It can be found here:

http://www.amazon.com/Darkness-Home-Xia-Harris/dp/B002AD9VUK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243384225&sr=1-3

I would super appreciate it, as there's no description or anything, so probably no one I don't know will buy it, which would pretty much negate the coolness of being listed on amazon for free.

Goddamn....

Foster kids have a wound that doesn't ever heal. Today I was watching some of the first season of Bones, which I'm just getting into. The episode "The Boy in the Bush" deals with foster kids, and really, just go watch it if you need to know why I spent the whole episode crying.

And it makes sense that Brennan was a foster kid, it does. I'm glad she had family to get her out, and I don't know how long she was in, but foster kids are almost all socially awkward, emotionally damaged people. Because rules made by parents who know you and love you and support you are much more conducive to those kinds of development than a service plan made by strangers who may be professionals but usually have never met you.

I'd say for people with means to consider becoming foster parents but the truth is that won't help. The system is designed badly, and is less about giving kids security and safety than it is about protecting the legal rights of parents. The system turns you into an asshole even if you're not one. Think you should be the one to make a decision about the toddler who has live with you for most of their lives medical processes? Sorry, that's the bio mom's job. Think that teenager who has lived with you for four years should be able to apply to Simon's Rock or some other school that accepts sophomores into college? Well there's no allowance for that in the service plan. That eight year old who smiled for the first time when you brought him to the pound to pick out a pet? Don't get too attached, he's going home to his abusive father and drug addict mom in four months.

And I'm honestly sorry to all the foster parents I was ever an ass to. Even if some of you were complete shitstains, I didn't understand that for others, it was not a matter of choice. And maybe, just maybe, some of you who were shitty didn't start out that way.

This article seems to be going around my flist: http://open.salon.com/blog/behind_blue_eyes/2009/05/22/obama_proposes_indefinite_preventive_detention_without_trial

Please read this one instead: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/21/AR2009052104045.html

Obama is in no way suggesting suspending habeas corpus for the average citizen. He is saying that we need to continue holding people who have been held without trial. There is a *huge* difference.

And shame on you, salon.com blogger for spreading misinformation like this. This is why the death of print media scares me. No one holds bloggers to journalistic standards. Which makes average people more susceptible to scare tactics. Please, read more than one article on a subject before you go proclaiming the goddamn end of days or something. Seriously, all it takes nowadays is less than one second on google.

While it saddens me that people are being held without trial, or even tribunal, maybe Barack Obama is only one guy. He's a badass guy, IMNSHO, but there's only one of him. He didn't put those people in prison, for the most part, and he's fixing for a lot of them to be able to go home. Maybe he can't fix everything all at once. Maybe we can hope the next POTUS will be half as goddamn effective in the first few months of his presidency.

We make movies and television about the end of the world, about enemies who are overwhelming, about horror and pain and suffering to escape the true horror of doing the same, safe, boring, miserable thing every day while nothing changes but the number of lines in our face, the amount of grey in our hair, until one day we die, leaving behind nothing but people who did the same but will still criticize the many ways in which we lacked.

I need something.
Was very cool. Food was too expensive for what it was.

There was however, one highlight for me personally. I spent over an hour talking to a priest. He paints icons. He explained to me what certain hand positions in the icons meant. He heard me explain to someone else who was interested that icons were originally meant to be interpretation of the gospel, because most people couldn't read, and seemed amazed that I would know that. I think I may have babbled a little. But his work is beautiful, and he was both interesting, and interested in what I had to say.

Holy inappropriate crush, batman. =/

Were you aware that pole dancing had championships?

I was not until today.

<lj-embed id="27" />

I don't care that the medium is pole dancing, these women are *athletes*. It's hot, yes, but also just amazing what these women can do with their bodies.

Also, am I evil because it amuses me to see Evanescence's music used for this?
